Edward H. Hartmann, P.E. is the founder and President of International TPM Institute, Inc. He was born in Switzerland and grew up in Zürich. After receiving his mechanical engineering degree, he emigrated to Canada and came to the United States in 1964. He studied industrial engineering at McGill University in Montreal and at the University of Southern California. Positions held early in his career were design engineer, industrial engineer and manufacturing engineer.

In 1969 he joined an international management consulting firm and eventually became a Senior Vice President, member of the Board of Directors and President of its training division. He has served consulting clients in the areas of production management, maintenance management and maintenance productivity improvement for more than 25 years. Since 1985, he has studied the application and results of TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) during numerous plant visits to Japan. Currently, he is spending full time assisting companies around the world in developing and installing customized TPM and other productivity and maintenance programs in their plants. Known as the "Father of TPM in the United States," he has developed the state of the art TPM, in particular developing and applying a successful approach to installing TPM in Western plants. Numerous very successful TPM installations, following his TPEM® (Total Productive Equipment Management) approach, have been completed in the U.S., Latin America and Europe. He has lectured on TPM, PM/PDM (Preventive/Predictive Maintenance) and Maintenance Management to over 6,000 managers, engineers, maintenance and production personnel in the U.S., Canada, South America, Southeast Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Europe.

Mr. Hartmann is a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) and past president of several chapters of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). He has served as director of the 8000-member Management Division and as chairman of the IIE Maintenance Task Force. Mr. Hartmann initiated and chaired the 1984 and 1985 International Maintenance Conference and has served on its program committee ever since. He has conducted more than 300 maintenance management seminars for business and professional organizations in over 25 countries. In Los Angeles, he was guest lecturer at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Organizations he has presented at include the American Institute of Plant Engineers (AIPE), Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), Norwegian Society of Professional Engineers, CIDES in Santiago, Chile, and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He is the editor of the book Maintenance Management and author of the best-selling book, Sucessfully Installing TPM in Non-Japanese Plant which was published in 1992 and subsequently translated into German, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.
